Day 2 Fogo June 17
For a change, the weather forecast had not lied, and we woke up to another beautiful day, but unfortunately, looks like the streak ends today .
After breakfast, we went to a nearby trail.
Michael had been enticed by Madonna who told him that we were sure to see caribou around the end of the trail. People with saintly names like Madonna, should not lie. No caribou. Or at least, none that ever announced themselves to us.
The trail was not too far from our cabin, and across the bay from the Fogo Inn. And it didn't take too long before we came across one of the artist studios that Fogo is renown for.
Michael is not attempting to hide in the Gaze. He might be looking to see whether any caribou are hiding behind the Gaze. The entire trail was advertised as 2.6km, but I never told Michael, that it wasn't a loop and you'd have to do the 2.6 km back . So inevitably, be it the heat, or the disillusionment that the hills were not teeming with caribou, I was left to finish the trail on my own.I persevered and continued till the end, until I met The Great Auk.This bronze sculpture memorializes the bird that became extinct in the mid 1800s when the last two auks were shot by bird collectors in Iceland. It faces towards another bronze sculpture in Iceland.
After getting back to the cabin, and getting properly rehydrated and having lunch, we just took it easy for a while.
Before you know it, it was time for supper, and we had heard about this tiny café, in another small community on the island called Tilting, that makes fabulous Neapolitan pizza, but only on Friday, Saturdays, and Sundays, and only by preorder. We drove around the community first.
(A salt box house as per Google: is a gable-roofed residential structure that is typically two stories in the front and one in the rear).
And this pizza was as good as any pizza I've had in Little Italy in Montreal. Without a word burning oven, the crust was perfect. I don't know how that was accomplished. It was so alluring, that I gobbled it up without stopping to take a picture.
Don't know what we'll be doing tomorrow, on our last day here . Depends how rainy it gets.
