Going to St. John's June 27

So our one hour trip to St. John's, took all day. Some of the roads were a nightmare. Would you believe 20 minutes on a gravel road masquerading as a highway? And the final 7 kilometers, on the most narrow 2 way road I've ever seen.
No surprise there. We took a giant detour to Cape St. Mary's Ecological Reserve .  Once you get to the interpretation center, there's still a walk of 1.4 km to get to the cliffs to see the birds. It was totally enshrouded in fog. And I had the sinking feeling that we wouldn't be able to see anything. But it was beautifully clear where the cliffs were.
There was a park ranger that helped to identify the birds. The big white ones with yellow on their heads, are gannets. Birds that resembled little penguins, were murres. The smaller white birds, with grey on their wings, were kittiwakes. And birds that looked like the murres, but way smaller, and tucked in the niches, were razorbills. Good that she was there, because I had misidentified 3 out of 4 types of birds. Now, I had been here, many many years ago. And what I remember most, besides the birds, was walking through a lot of sheep do do. At that time, there had been no walking trails and I don't even know how I made my way to the cliffs. I just remember not being happy about zigzagging around all the piles of sheep do.. So this time I brought a pair of boots and I made Michael buy a pair of rubber boots as well. But apparently, 9 years ago, a coyote decided that this was a perfect place to bed down and have a steady diet of sheep. The farmer lost over 40 sheep before he moved them somewhere. So now there is no sheep do do and besides that, there now is a trail. But I swear they're doing something to the measurements here cuz 1.4 km felt way longer than that.

From there we proceeded to lunch,
and then, onto St. John's. Pulled into the hotel around 5:30. The hotel's main entrance is on the harbor, but they also have a back door to Water St.The building used to be a warehouse and I love the brick walls and the wooden beams.
Dinner wasn't actually necessary cuz we were still quite full from lunch, but when has that stopped us? So we went to one of the pubs on Water Street and claimed a seat outside on the terrace. And as we sat there, I became more and more uncomfortable, because we've been away for over a month, and basically everywhere we've been, has been QUIET. And here, on the terrace, you'd watch people in their antique or souped up cars and an abundance of motorcycles revving up and down the street. I mean, we'd see the same drivers over and over again. The noise was jarring. The contrast to where we've been, was immense.
Once we finished eating, we just walked up and down and around.
We'll cover more territory here, tomorrow.
